Large rocks always point their finger at me and say, “Come climb on me!” They still do this, even at my age. I’m not sure what it is – maybe the texture, or maybe the challenge of it. In seeing these boys playing on the rocks, I wanted to do a painting with a limited palette with the blues, grays and burnt orange. I was playing around with the strong light in the foreground against the deep gray hiding what lies in the distance. This foreboding sense brings to light the world beyond the rocks on which they play.
