Painted in late August with the sun casting a warm yellow hue across the hills, the zigzag of fields make a wonderful patchwork of coordinated hues. What struck me were the simple shapes that swept my eye back and forth across the landscape that make a wonderful composition. It was kind of funny watching the heard of cows as I painted. They kept relocating from field to field, I think because it was so hot. I was happy that they finally settled along the fence line leading to the tree. I wasn't sure if I wanted to include them into the painting until then, but in this location, they set up a really nice rhythm to the piece.
