This was painted en plein air at the end of the lake that I grew up spending time on every summer since I was born. My grandparents met each other at the Camp of the Woods on the far end of this lake. Every summer since then, my parents, aunts and uncles spent summers at rented cabins, followed by my generation of cousins. We had so much fun running around in the woods, hiking, swimming and boating. Lake Pleasant is in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state.

I went to the same location two mornings in a row to create this painting, and was lucky to have similar days with the summer air and puffy clouds that created the same colors. I was on the property of a grand, white house with wraparound decks that offers the best view of the lake and distant mountains. The Adirondacks have attracted artists since the mid-19th century American art movement of the Hudson River School because of its beauty.
