If you’ve ever witnessed the migration of the monarch butterfly, you know how sensational it is. I was aware that they would fly through the area in greater numbers as autumn was knocking on the door, but until I saw the sheer numbers of them all together, I never really thought about this phenomenon and what it meant. It blows your mind to see the air filled with fluttering color and bushes breathing with its winged branches.
These delicate insects travel up to 3,000 miles, dodging predators, harsh weather, and man-made hazards to their winter home. The things they have to overcome to make it there seem overwhelming. In my mind, they become larger than life instead of an inch and a half long.
Riding the wind currents, their wings flicker in the sunlight, bursts of color appearing, disappearing, twisting and turning. They fill the air with energy and my heart pounds with excitement. I know the symbolism of the butterfly refers to transition, or maybe transforming states of consciousness or changing ones perception. I wanted my painting to really speak to the energy of motion that they bring. Energy is life giving. It pushes us forward. It gives us the restlessness to do great things.

Energy never stands still.
